What to look for in a Shopify giveaway & contest app (2026 checklist)

A giveaway is one of the fastest ways to grow an email list and social following — but the app you run it with can quietly cost you far more than the sticker price, or break at the worst moment. This checklist covers the seven things worth verifying before you install, based on the complaints merchants in this category most often report.

1. Is pricing flat, or tiered with surprise upgrades?

The pattern to watch for: a low headline price that turns out to be an entry ticket. You start building a contest, then discover the entry types you actually need are locked behind a plan two or three tiers up — and the monthly bill lands at three or four times what you expected. Check whether every entry method you need is included in the base plan, or gated.

2. Does the app authorize variable charges on your Shopify bill?

Some apps request a large usage-based spending authorization at install (merchants have reported limits in the thousands of dollars per month). Even if you're never charged that much, seeing a four-figure authorization on your Shopify billing feels like a scam and is a documented reason merchants uninstall on day one. A fixed monthly price authorizes exactly that — nothing variable.

3. Can you always access your entrants' data, or is it paywalled?

The whole point of a giveaway is the email list you build. Some apps blur or lock entrant emails behind an upgrade — you can see that 800 people entered, but to actually export their addresses you have to pay more. Verify you can export a full CSV of entrants on the plan you're paying for.

4. Is the widget native to your theme, or an external iframe?

Many contest apps inject a script that loads an iframe from the vendor's own domain, with the real dashboard living on a separate website. That means an extra external request on your storefront, styling that never quite matches your theme, and a second login to manage. A native theme app embed renders inside your store, matches your design, and is managed from your Shopify admin.

5. Is entry sign-in simple, or a confusing multi-provider login?

If entrants are asked to authenticate through several social providers, many hit a cross-account message ("this email is already linked, sign in with…") that reads like phishing — and they abandon. Every abandoned entry is a lost email. Look for a single, clear entry step (a verified email is enough).

6. Are winners notified automatically, or do you do it by hand?

Some apps pick a winner but leave you to copy the email and write to them yourself — easy to forget, easy to get wrong, and slow for the winner. Check whether the app notifies the winner automatically and shows the result on your storefront.

7. Does it actually work — and does support answer?

Read the most recent one- and two-star reviews specifically for two words: "crash" and "support". Contest apps that fail during campaign creation, or whose support tells unhappy merchants to "find another app", turn a time-sensitive launch into a disaster. Send a pre-sales question and time the reply.
